Freestyle Motocross

Saturday - 7:30PM -

On the eve of opening day in Major League Baseball the riders knocked it out of the park. The near capacity crowd yelled themselves hoarse cheering the boys to go higher. Things started off quickly with Paul Smith and Doug Cossey droppin’ an 85.0 and an 84.5 respectively. The eager Englishman Chris Birch rolled out next and put up an 84.9. The youngster Brody “the Ninja” Wilson rocked out an 89.5 which made him the second place qualifier for our final. Clint Esposito and Scott Hanlon both had good runs but they just didn’t quite have enough to get into the final. The elder statesman Garry “G-Rob” Robertson showed some old school poise for an 88.4 and fourth qualifying position. Greg Hartman and Dustin Nowak followed him and both qualified easily for the final.

During our break between qualifying runs the Hell on Wheels BMX crew rocked the house. X-games Champ Scott Kramer was a particular crowd favorite and had the crowd totally amped up. The boys closed the show with a first for me, a train of three front flips, it was off the hook.

Keith Wineland took over and defied gravity with his Trials run. The crowd was on its feet cheering him on several occasions as he showed the skill that took him to a sixth place finish in last years national championship. Keith was feeling very saucy and pulled one of our long time floor guys, Phil, out and did a lengthwise bunny hop over him to close his show.

The Team FMX competition was a dog fight with the three teams vying for top honors to be judged by crowd noise. Doug Cossey and Chris Birch went first and were able to hold off team two which consisted of Gary Robertson and Clint Esposito, however the final team of Greg Hartman and Dustin Nowak proved to be too much and took home top honors in Charlottesville.

Following the Team FMX the Urias Globe of Death worked the crowd into a lather leading into the finals. Melvin, Erwin and Olga showed Charlottesville why they are the oldest and best in the business.

The stage was set for the last FMX finals event of the year and you could feel the energy in the John Paul Jones Arena. G-Rob started us off with an 89.0 and enjoyed what may be his final seat in the Toyota Hot Seat. Brody Wilson unceremoniously knocked the veteran off the throne and was then supplanted himself by Greg Hartman. Dustin Nowak was our final rider and he made good use of his time on the course drilling his back flip and taking the win with an 89.5.

It has been an awesome year on the FMX tour and we look forward to seeing everyone next year. David Knisley
